Narrative:

I am chief pilot of a 2 pilot corporation aviation shop. Second pilot is type rated in aircraft and was in left seat for this trip. It was our first trip to dca. It was dark with light rain and good ground visibility. I was holding the commercial approach plates, but the left seat pilot had a runway diagram on his knee board. The runway diagram he had was from a superseded set and was out of date. I was unaware of this and thought he had the current chart. The current chart was in the stack I had, but I was unaware of this. Since he had the chart on his knee board, I could not see it well enough to read. Ground control cleared us to taxi to runway 33, via taxiway F, hold short of runway 36. We taxied slowly and complied with ground's instructions to hold left to avoid an air carrier. We found the sign taxiway F/runway 36/18 and started to proceed on taxiway F. The chart (old version) showed a grass infield before reaching the outboard taxiway. As we crossed a hold line (I saw it, PF did not due to rain/glare). We stopped, confused that we could already be at runway 36. Ground called us to hold position, asked if we had crossed the hold line, then said 'don't answer that, just do a 180 degree and hold short.' the hold line was under us at this point. We did a 180 degree turn and repositioned to hold short. There was no immediate traffic conflict. Later we determined that one change on the chart was the elimination of the grass infield we were looking for. We broke our normal procedure by having the PF hold the chart, usually the PNF gives guidance. Supplemental information from acn 393721: the aircraft is equipped with one full set of pubs. The jan 1998 revision set included an airfield diagram for washington national. Knowing that a trip to national was scheduled, the sep 1997 diagram was marked 'outdated' and put with my personal gear to augment my situational awareness. During taxi, I had that diagram and I assumed that the PNF had the current revision. Although he had all the current dca plates, he saw the diagram in front of me and assumed I had the current revision.

Title: SABRE LINER CROSSES THE HOLD LINE AT DCA. IT WAS A DARK AND RAINY NIGHT.

Narrative: I AM CHIEF PLT OF A 2 PLT CORPORATION AVIATION SHOP. SECOND PLT IS TYPE RATED IN ACFT AND WAS IN L SEAT FOR THIS TRIP. IT WAS OUR FIRST TRIP TO DCA. IT WAS DARK WITH LIGHT RAIN AND GOOD GND VISIBILITY. I WAS HOLDING THE COMMERCIAL APCH PLATES, BUT THE L SEAT PLT HAD A RWY DIAGRAM ON HIS KNEE BOARD. THE RWY DIAGRAM HE HAD WAS FROM A SUPERSEDED SET AND WAS OUT OF DATE. GND CTL CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 33, VIA TXWY F, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 36. WE TAXIED SLOWLY AND COMPLIED WITH GND'S INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD L TO AVOID AN ACR. WE FOUND THE SIGN TXWY F/RWY 36/18 AND STARTED TO PROCEED ON TXWY F. THE CHART (OLD VERSION) SHOWED A GRASS INFIELD BEFORE REACHING THE OUTBOARD TXWY. AS WE CROSSED A HOLD LINE (I SAW IT, PF DID NOT DUE TO RAIN/GLARE). WE STOPPED, CONFUSED THAT WE COULD ALREADY BE AT RWY 36. GND CALLED US TO HOLD POS, ASKED IF WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD LINE, THEN SAID 'DON'T ANSWER THAT, JUST DO A 180 DEG AND HOLD SHORT.' THE HOLD LINE WAS UNDER US AT THIS POINT. WE DID A 180 DEG TURN AND REPOSITIONED TO HOLD SHORT. THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE TFC CONFLICT. LATER WE DETERMINED THAT ONE CHANGE ON THE CHART WAS THE ELIMINATION OF THE GRASS INFIELD WE WERE LOOKING FOR. WE BROKE OUR NORMAL PROC BY HAVING THE PF HOLD THE CHART, USUALLY THE PNF GIVES GUIDANCE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 393721: THE ACFT IS EQUIPPED WITH ONE FULL SET OF PUBS.
