Narrative:

I was cleared to climb from 15000 ft to 16000 ft to go over the st louis airspace. As the autoplt was leveling off I noticed the compass wasn't slaved. I pushed the slaving button in, which kicked off the autoplt. The airplane was not yet trimmed for level flight. Before I realized it I climbed 400 ft above my assigned altitude. I immediately descended back to 16000 ft. When the autoplt kicked off I should have taken faster corrective action.
