Narrative:

Exceeded assigned altitude on climb out. Assigned altitude 7000 ft. Altitude reached 7450 ft. Observed by pilot and corrected in less than 1 min. Instrument scan interrupted by pilots observation of rapid ice build-up in cloud. Clouds 5000- 8000 ft MSL. Higher than normal rate of climb to 'on top' due to ice. No autoplt altitude preselect/alerter. Excess altitude observed by pilot and corrected by pilot in less than 1 min. Pilot obtained clearance to continue climb to 9000 ft MSL. Cloud tops higher than reported. Tops reported to be 6000 ft 1 hour before departure. Temperature lower than reported. Temperature reported 4 degrees C at 7000 ft MSL 1 hour before departure.
