Narrative:

Having been cleared to descend to 5000 ft we were advised of VFR traffic at 6500 ft. As we passed 6500 ft the controller told us to level off at 7000 ft. At 6500 ft we sighted the light aircraft. We continued to descend to distance ourselves from the crossing traffic. Had we tried to climb back up to 7000 ft, we would have come much too close to the crossing traffic.
