Narrative:

I am a student pilot on my first solo cross country. I am in class C airspace and approach (fort wayne) advised me to contact fort wayne tower. I told tower 'cherokee xx is with you.' tower reply by asking my intentions. I replied 'left traffic for runway 23 for a landing (instead of, for the option). Tower responded with a clearance to land. After I landed, I proceeded to takeoff (thinking I was cleared for the option). Before I could contact tower to ask for a departure to my heading, I was made aware of my error. Tower said I was only cleared to land and therefore when I took off, I did not have clearance.
