Narrative:

I was giving instrument flight instruction using the lda. At hfd ceilings were 800 ft, in VFR conditions. The student leveled off at 650 ft but lost 50 ft in a few seconds. The MDA at that point was still 640 ft MSL. I noticed the altitude bust and was going back up to 640 ft when brainerd tower called us to check altitude.

Title: C172 ACFT ON INSTRUCTIONAL FLT, TRNEE PLT LEVELED 50 FT LOWER THAN MDA. TWR CTLR CALLED WITH THE LOW ALT ALERT AT THE SAME TIME INSTRUCTOR PLT WAS CORRECTING.
