Narrative:

Location: act VOR. Departing act we were assigned a heading of 305 degrees by departure control. We were instructed to fly that heading until receiving jen then proceed direct. As the PF and the autoplt not on, the first officer selected direct jen and selected navigation. I started a turn and followed the V bars. The first officer mentioned that things did not look right. At that point ATC questioned our heading and said fly 305 degrees until receiving jen. The first officer acknowledged the error and I turned on course using raw data. I should have checked raw data before following the V bars. ATC made no mention of a problem. Continued flight to dfw. Supplemental information from acn 389720: as PNF, I should have selected raw data first and backed it up with the FMC. Not doing this caused the captain to fly the wrong heading.
