Narrative:

After a vector began for runway 8L at ont, I set the captain's navaids for the approach. He had briefed a possible visual to runway 26L since he'd heard socal approach offer the same to other aircraft preceding us into ont. Shortly after the vectoring began, the captain acquired parallel east/west runways in the distance, and directed me to call the field in sight for the visual approach. Socal cleared us for the visual and sent us over to ont tower frequency. At this point, I began retuning locs, inbound courses, and listening for identify. Meanwhile, the captain was rushing to get down and configure the aircraft. The so rechked landing data with about 8 KTS of tailwind landing on runway 26L. When we failed to get a good localizer identify, I checked the captain's instruments for failure flags. (My localizer was noted inoperative on the release.) he wasn't getting a good signal, so I asked the tower about the runway 26L localizer status and if he saw us on final for runway 26L. That's when he said he saw us on final at chino airport and directed us to go around. Factors: 1) we were hurrying to make up for a delay at the departure station. 2) neither front seat pilot had been to ont recently. 3) chino airport's parallel runways have a PAPI on runway 26L just like ont. 4) the decision for the visual left very little time to get down, configure, and set up for a stabilized approach. 5) failure to confirm field position with socal prior to clearance for approach.

Title: RPTED NIGHTTIME VISUAL APCH INITIALLY MADE TO CNO ARPT INSTEAD OF ONT UNTIL THE ONT LCL CTLR SAW THEM AND DIRECTED A GAR.

Narrative: AFTER A VECTOR BEGAN FOR RWY 8L AT ONT, I SET THE CAPT'S NAVAIDS FOR THE APCH. HE HAD BRIEFED A POSSIBLE VISUAL TO RWY 26L SINCE HE'D HEARD SOCAL APCH OFFER THE SAME TO OTHER ACFT PRECEDING US INTO ONT. SHORTLY AFTER THE VECTORING BEGAN, THE CAPT ACQUIRED PARALLEL E/W RWYS IN THE DISTANCE, AND DIRECTED ME TO CALL THE FIELD IN SIGHT FOR THE VISUAL APCH. SOCAL CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL AND SENT US OVER TO ONT TWR FREQ. AT THIS POINT, I BEGAN RETUNING LOCS, INBOUND COURSES, AND LISTENING FOR IDENT. MEANWHILE, THE CAPT WAS RUSHING TO GET DOWN AND CONFIGURE THE ACFT. THE SO RECHKED LNDG DATA WITH ABOUT 8 KTS OF TAILWIND LNDG ON RWY 26L. WHEN WE FAILED TO GET A GOOD LOC IDENT, I CHKED THE CAPT'S INSTS FOR FAILURE FLAGS. (MY LOC WAS NOTED INOP ON THE RELEASE.) HE WASN'T GETTING A GOOD SIGNAL, SO I ASKED THE TWR ABOUT THE RWY 26L LOC STATUS AND IF HE SAW US ON FINAL FOR RWY 26L. THAT'S WHEN HE SAID HE SAW US ON FINAL AT CHINO ARPT AND DIRECTED US TO GAR. FACTORS: 1) WE WERE HURRYING TO MAKE UP FOR A DELAY AT THE DEP STATION. 2) NEITHER FRONT SEAT PLT HAD BEEN TO ONT RECENTLY. 3) CHINO ARPT'S PARALLEL RWYS HAVE A PAPI ON RWY 26L JUST LIKE ONT. 4) THE DECISION FOR THE VISUAL LEFT VERY LITTLE TIME TO GET DOWN, CONFIGURE, AND SET UP FOR A STABILIZED APCH. 5) FAILURE TO CONFIRM FIELD POS WITH SOCAL PRIOR TO CLRNC FOR APCH.
