Narrative:

Civet 2 arrival lax, LNAV/VNAV in use. Received at least 4 speed adjustments on arrival. Last speed assigned was 250 KTS. Below 10000 ft VNAV slows to 240 KTS to avoid overspd. Selected flaps to 1 degree and EICAS displayed 'trailing edge flap disagreement' with no flap movement. Began the abnormal checklist and when preparing to advise ATC of speed reduction, we were given frequency change. Next frequency very congested and while working on the problem, I failed to advise approach control of speed, controller very cooperative and made flaps 20 degree landing per checklist. Called ATC watch supervisor. Supplemental information from acn 388643: I requested flaps 1 degree and EICAS displayed 'trailing edge disagreement.' we then followed our procedures for problem. We started slowing to 200 KTS. We were going to advise ATC as soon as possible, but frequency was congested. Then received frequency change. We told next controller of slowing and problem. We extended flaps using alternate procedures. Landing normal with 20 degrees flaps. Ground control gave phone number to contact watch supervisor on approach control.
