Narrative:

Location: worth 7 departure, 260 degree radial, 15 DME. Shortly after takeoff, flight attendants reported smoke and acrid smelling fumes from rear of aircraft. Called departure control and requested return for precautionary landing. Accomplished the air conditioning smoke/fumes checklist, the cabin or cockpit fire/smoke checklist, and smoke removal checklist. Advised by flight attendants that smoke dissipated but acrid smell still evident. Landed overweight at 140000 pounds, sink rate 400 FPM, soft landing. Taxied to gate and debriefed maintenance. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was an md super 80 and the corrective action by maintenance was the replacement of the right pack air cycle machine and the left and right coalescer bags. The reporter said the aircraft landed overweight and the overweight landing check was ok. Supplemental information from acn 389460: first aware of situation during taxi out. I was initially only aware of burning smell only. The smoke and smell dissipated during taxi out. Immediately after taxi off, the smoke and smell returned heavily. All flight attendants experienced burning of eyes and nasal passages. It took 40 mins from the time we notified the cockpit until we reached the gate back at dfw. Immediately after all passenger deplaned and for 2 hours thereafter, all flight attendants experienced lightheadedness, slight nausea, and lingering burning of the eyes. Supplemental information from acn 389461: the flight attendants' eyes burned, nose and throat. We later became dizzy and disoriented. It lasted for approximately 2 hours.

THE SMOKE AND SMELL DISSIPATED DURING TAXI OUT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAXI OFF, THE SMOKE AND SMELL RETURNED HEAVILY. ALL FLT ATTENDANTS EXPERIENCED BURNING OF EYES AND NASAL PASSAGES. IT TOOK 40 MINS FROM THE TIME WE NOTIFIED THE COCKPIT UNTIL WE REACHED THE GATE BACK AT DFW. IMMEDIATELY AFTER ALL PAX DEPLANED AND FOR 2 HRS THEREAFTER, ALL FLT ATTENDANTS EXPERIENCED LIGHTHEADEDNESS, SLIGHT NAUSEA, AND LINGERING BURNING OF THE EYES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 389461: THE FLT ATTENDANTS' EYES BURNED, NOSE AND THROAT. WE LATER BECAME DIZZY AND DISORIENTED. IT LASTED FOR APPROX 2 HRS.
