Narrative:

The flight plan predicted moderate turbulence near new york. Captain told us to be done with service before then. Unexpected severe turbulence hit us 1 hour into flight, 60 mi south of charleston. Captain noted stream of clouds ahead, turned on seat belt sign, announcement made to passenger to check seat belts. I was walking into cabin to check belts, hit a few moderate bumps, grabbed handle in galley wall. Passenger held my hand till I could get to a seat. My jump seat was blocked by meal cart used for tray set-up. 2 passenger had coffee spilled on them in main cabin, 1 boy in main cabin hit in head by juice can thrown out of galley compartment. Right hand aft lavatory smoke alarm set off by jolt of turbulence, was able to reset after flight smoothed out. No one in first class was hurt, just some dropped objects. I hit one knee against wall, the other 2 flight attendants in main cabin were in the aisle with beverage cart. They were bounced around and off the floor several inches. They were bruised and strained some muscles but no serious injuries. I felt anxious but knew we and the plane were okay. The other 2 flight attendants were not so sure, because the further back the more you feel bumps and they heard what they thought was an unusual noise as we descended. The cockpit later told us the noise was the speed brakes. During the turbulence it was not possible to do anything but look out for ourselves, due to quickness of onset and the fact that we were the only people not strapped in. All passenger were seated and belted at the time. Inserts came out of the beverage cart in the aisle and galley compartments in main cabin. Bins stayed closed. The closets stayed closed, but the garment bags all fell off the rung. Turbulence lasted approximately 10 mins.
