Narrative:

I was the captain of flight XXX bna to bhm. We were level at 11000 ft. ATC called company traffic at 2:30 O'clock position (7 or 8 mi?). I reported company in sight and we were issued a climb to 15000 ft and maintain visual separation with company. I suggested we expedite climb above his level which we did. We leveled at 15000 ft at that time almost 2000 ft above company. The company aircraft continued to climb on a converging course, until almost directly under us and 300 ft below when we received an RA to climb. We climbed to 15300 ft and received monitor vertical speed advisory. I reported the RA to center and was shortly issued climb to FL180. I later talked to company aircraft and was told he received RA also. He was also cleared to 15000 ft. I am still at a loss as to what happened.
