Narrative:

At jfk with runway 31L in use, I was cleared to taxi on taxiway a to hold short of taxiway H. I missed the 90 degree turn that taxiway a makes and continued straight ahead moving onto taxiway J. I approached runway 4L/22R (not the active runway, but it was open) and asked the first officer whether ground had cleared us to cross. My first officer said yes and stated we were to hold short of taxiway H on the other side of runway 4L/22R. Later when we talked about what had happened, he said that at this time he too thought we were still on taxiway a also. As we crossed runway 4L/22R ground advised us that we had missed the turn and we were to now turn on taxiway Y to hold short of taxiway H. There was no traffic conflict and jfk ground did not sound upset, but nevertheless, we had crossed an active runway without clearance. Probable cause: checklist distrs, nighttime operation at a very large, busy airport, taxiway lighting and markers. Lesson learned: if I find myself asking my first officer, maybe we should be asking the controling agency.

Title: L1011 FLC TAXIING AFTER LNDG DIDN'T FOLLOW CLRED TXWY RTE AND CROSSED A RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative: AT JFK WITH RWY 31L IN USE, I WAS CLRED TO TAXI ON TXWY A TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY H. I MISSED THE 90 DEG TURN THAT TXWY A MAKES AND CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD MOVING ONTO TXWY J. I APCHED RWY 4L/22R (NOT THE ACTIVE RWY, BUT IT WAS OPEN) AND ASKED THE FO WHETHER GND HAD CLRED US TO CROSS. MY FO SAID YES AND STATED WE WERE TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY H ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 4L/22R. LATER WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED, HE SAID THAT AT THIS TIME HE TOO THOUGHT WE WERE STILL ON TXWY A ALSO. AS WE CROSSED RWY 4L/22R GND ADVISED US THAT WE HAD MISSED THE TURN AND WE WERE TO NOW TURN ON TXWY Y TO HOLD SHORT OF TXWY H. THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT AND JFK GND DID NOT SOUND UPSET, BUT NEVERTHELESS, WE HAD CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. PROBABLE CAUSE: CHKLIST DISTRS, NIGHTTIME OP AT A VERY LARGE, BUSY ARPT, TXWY LIGHTING AND MARKERS. LESSON LEARNED: IF I FIND MYSELF ASKING MY FO, MAYBE WE SHOULD BE ASKING THE CTLING AGENCY.
