Narrative:

Dfw runway 17L/35R needs to be renamed runway 16/34 (or 19/01). Dfw recently opened an additional n-s runway on the east side of the airport. It's not unusual for regional approach to issue last min runway changes and a short approach. There can be a lot of confusion with which one of 3 runways labeled '17' you are to line up with (17L, 17C, 17R plus all the txwys). There's usually no time to rebrief the approach or even tune in the ILS frequency. The potential for error is high and could be easily eliminated if the runway on the far east side were labeled separate from the closely spaced runway 17's. I've talked to other crews (based in dfw) who also find this a problem. (Many of whom have in fact already lined up for the wrong runway.) it's mentally another distraction at the most critical phase of flight that isn't needed and could be easily corrected. Once again, the simple fix -- rename runway 17L/35R to runway 16/34. Note: as of yet I have not lined up for the wrong runway -- but if this isn't corrected, it's just a matter of time.

Title: MD80 FLC DISTURBED WITH THE RWY DESIGNATION OF NEW RWY AT DFW. THE THIRD PARALLEL RWY SEEMS TO CREATE CONFUSION. RENAMING THE RWY FROM RWY 17L/35R TO RWY 16/34 WOULD CLARIFY WHICH RWY TO BE USED.

Narrative: DFW RWY 17L/35R NEEDS TO BE RENAMED RWY 16/34 (OR 19/01). DFW RECENTLY OPENED AN ADDITIONAL N-S RWY ON THE E SIDE OF THE ARPT. IT'S NOT UNUSUAL FOR REGIONAL APCH TO ISSUE LAST MIN RWY CHANGES AND A SHORT APCH. THERE CAN BE A LOT OF CONFUSION WITH WHICH ONE OF 3 RWYS LABELED '17' YOU ARE TO LINE UP WITH (17L, 17C, 17R PLUS ALL THE TXWYS). THERE'S USUALLY NO TIME TO REBRIEF THE APCH OR EVEN TUNE IN THE ILS FREQ. THE POTENTIAL FOR ERROR IS HIGH AND COULD BE EASILY ELIMINATED IF THE RWY ON THE FAR EAST SIDE WERE LABELED SEPARATE FROM THE CLOSELY SPACED RWY 17'S. I'VE TALKED TO OTHER CREWS (BASED IN DFW) WHO ALSO FIND THIS A PROB. (MANY OF WHOM HAVE IN FACT ALREADY LINED UP FOR THE WRONG RWY.) IT'S MENTALLY ANOTHER DISTR AT THE MOST CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT THAT ISN'T NEEDED AND COULD BE EASILY CORRECTED. ONCE AGAIN, THE SIMPLE FIX -- RENAME RWY 17L/35R TO RWY 16/34. NOTE: AS OF YET I HAVE NOT LINED UP FOR THE WRONG RWY -- BUT IF THIS ISN'T CORRECTED, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME.
