Narrative:

Just past trm VOR we requested direct to elp from ZAB. The controller told us to turn right 10 degrees, then 10 degrees more for our heading. The controller then told us she would clear us direct to elp in approximately 15 mi. A short time later we were cleared direct to elp but were not given a heading. I selected direct to elp on our GPS and the aircraft turned to 060 degrees. A short time later ZAB told us to expedite a turn to 150 degrees, which we did. We held this heading for several mins and were informed that ZAB had lost separation with us. We were then reclred direct to elp and given phone number to call ZAB. Upon arrival in iah, I called ZAB and was informed a pilot deviation was being filed by ZAB. Why this incident occurred I do not know. We followed ATC's instructions as we understood them.
