Narrative:

We were descending, as well as diverting around WX going into tpa at night. We encountered what we thought was an altitude deviation from what we thought our clearance was from ZJX, while descending for the ILS approach to runway 18L at tampa international. When we arrived on the ground at tampa, without being prompted I decided to call ZJX for a clarification of what they were wanting us to do. They assured us that no violation had taken place, but that when in doubt to make sure what our clearance was. They also said that when not sure to always 'verify your clearance.' the lesson learned is to be cautious next time as well as alert when given altitude changes while descending.
