Narrative:

On oct/xx/97, I and a former student rented a 74KCAB (citabria) in order to go for a pleasure flight. The flight lasted 1.2 hours and occurred without incident. About 1 week later, I was told by the FBO owner that the aircraft had been ramp checked by an FAA inspector while being rented by another customer. The FAA found the plane's temporary registration had expired. The FAA then obtained names of all previous renters. I have not yet received a letter of investigation but expect to. I should have been more careful during preflight. Forgot to check registration.
