Narrative:

I was flying a single radio F-5E based at NAS fallon direct nfl at FL310. At approximately the nfl 095175, ZOA cleared me direct mina-yerin-nfl. This amendment was to avoid the austin/gabbs special use airspace (FL280) during the ensuing descent. I was initially unable to receive mina and mistakenly did not ask for an initial vector. As a result I made a 20 degree left course correction whereas a 45 degree left course correction for mina was in order. At this same time I requested a frequency change (monitor guard) to coordinate entry into the sua from desert control for my descent. After reporting back in with center and receiving the handoff to desert, the incorrect course adjustment placed me very close to the lateral border of the austin/gabbs sua complex, prior to a proper handoff being accomplished. Lesson learned: I should have focused more attention on proper navigation to mina and asked for vector assistance prior to coordinating entry into the sua -- especially considering the F-5E was single radio.

Title: AN F-5E FIGHTER GETS CLRNC FOR SUA, BUT DOES NOT HAVE GOOD NAV EQUIP TO VERIFY EXACT LOCATION. ACFT COMES CLOSE TO EXITING SUA, BUT, STAYS WITHIN CONFINES AFTER BETTER VECTOR FOR BETTER NAV.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING A SINGLE RADIO F-5E BASED AT NAS FALLON DIRECT NFL AT FL310. AT APPROX THE NFL 095175, ZOA CLRED ME DIRECT MINA-YERIN-NFL. THIS AMENDMENT WAS TO AVOID THE AUSTIN/GABBS SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE (FL280) DURING THE ENSUING DSCNT. I WAS INITIALLY UNABLE TO RECEIVE MINA AND MISTAKENLY DID NOT ASK FOR AN INITIAL VECTOR. AS A RESULT I MADE A 20 DEG L COURSE CORRECTION WHEREAS A 45 DEG L COURSE CORRECTION FOR MINA WAS IN ORDER. AT THIS SAME TIME I REQUESTED A FREQ CHANGE (MONITOR GUARD) TO COORDINATE ENTRY INTO THE SUA FROM DESERT CTL FOR MY DSCNT. AFTER RPTING BACK IN WITH CTR AND RECEIVING THE HDOF TO DESERT, THE INCORRECT COURSE ADJUSTMENT PLACED ME VERY CLOSE TO THE LATERAL BORDER OF THE AUSTIN/GABBS SUA COMPLEX, PRIOR TO A PROPER HDOF BEING ACCOMPLISHED. LESSON LEARNED: I SHOULD HAVE FOCUSED MORE ATTN ON PROPER NAV TO MINA AND ASKED FOR VECTOR ASSISTANCE PRIOR TO COORDINATING ENTRY INTO THE SUA -- ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE F-5E WAS SINGLE RADIO.
