Narrative:

Flying with wife in preparation for her private chkride. Cruising 350 degrees at 4500 ft MSL toward hfd VOR. The ceiling of the riv class C southern outer area is 5500 ft. We began our climb to 6500 ft before we reached hfd VOR, but may have clipped the edge of the class C airspace. Cause: preflight planning did not indicate exactly when to climb to 6500 ft. Contributing factors: the distraction of explaining cross country procedures to my wife. Corrective action: I will pay more astute attention to detail on planning flts of this nature.
