Narrative:
Teb 4 departure SID calls for runway heading till 1500 ft, then 280 degrees until 4.6 DME, then climb to 3000 ft. Confused with DME on GPS king 89B and climbed to 3000 ft before DME 4.6. No conflict but controller chastised me for climbing before 4.6 DME. Better understanding of GPS needed.
