Narrative:

On downwind, we were told to descend to 4000 ft and slow to 170 KTS. We acknowledged descend to 4000 ft and slow to 170 KTS. Descending through 5000 ft, approach asked us what altitude we were cleared to. We responded 4000 ft. He said he didn't remember giving us a clearance to 4000 ft. No conflict. He then cleared us to 2000 ft.
