Narrative:

On departure from buf, departure control gave us a clearance to climb to 16000 ft, heading 085 degrees for climb, intercept V14. Passing buf VOR, turned to 120 degree heading to intercept. Departure then asked our heading as a target appeared on TCASII 10 degrees left, 1000 ft higher, but descending. Departure then said this heading was ok and to continue. We were switched to center before I could verify what he wanted. Supplemental information from acn 379730: on climb out of buf, ATC assigned heading of 085 degrees to intercept V14. After passing VOR, we turned to heading 120 degrees to intercept. ATC then questioned our heading and referenced traffic about 12 O'clock 5 mi passing from right to left.
