Narrative:

Flight xyz had just parked and shut down at sea airport. People had been taken into terminal by EMS which is our normal routine. I exited aircraft to go inside for paperwork for next flight. My first officer remained on the aircraft. I was inside when operations told me my engine was on fire. I went back outside immediately and saw my first officer looking at #2. He told me about 3 mins after we shut down, he got a #2 fire warning. He looked outside and saw smoke. He pulled #2 fire handle, discharged #2 agent and the warning extinguished. He called operations and told them and asked for fire trucks. He then got all ground personnel off aircraft. Fire trucks showed up but no action was necessary. Maintenance opened up cowlings and said the starter/generator had fried and started fire around existing wiring, etc. Do not know what caused this. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was an ATR42 and maintenance did not advise the reporter of the precise cause of the starter/generator combination failure. The reporter said the starter and generator operation was normal on the inbound trip with no indication of trouble. The reporter stated the FAA has not been in contact regarding this incident.
