Narrative:

On climb out from ind at approximately 12500 ft, control of aircraft was switched so captain (first officer flying) could talk to company. Several other distrs caused us to miss a 14000 ft altitude assignment by about 500 ft on leveloff. We then determined that the altitude was not missed and we were already cleared to FL220. Various distrs caused us to miss the clearance to FL220 and subsequently make an abrupt return to 14000 ft from 14500 ft, still thinking that 14000 ft was the assigned altitude.
