Narrative:

Both captain and copilot had recent familiarity with ewr departures. About 20 mins prior to pushback the copilot briefed and both pilots set up for a ewr 6 departure -- the familiar and recently used departure. It was the copilot's leg. Runway 22R had been closed due to air carrier accident. At pushback the pre departure clearance arrived simultaneously with the opening of runway 22R. Since runway 22R had been closed, takeoff data for runway 22R was not included with our papers. Entire crew occupied with confirming runway 22R usage, coupled with everyone desiring an on-time pushback. Both pilots noted parke as first vector fix, but neither pilot noted we were to use the 'arthur kill 1 departure' to parke vice the briefed and familiar 'ewr 6 departure' to parke. (Arthur kill 1 departure was a new procedure effective jul/xa/97.) when we erroneously flew out on a 220 degree heading (of the ewr 6) vice the 250 degree heading on the arthur kill, we had to be 'educated' by ATC (departure) that we were cleared the 'arthur kill.' our error was noted, and correction made with radar vector direct to sbj, 112.9, solberg. Distraction by runway 22R runway opening and rush to get off on time, coupled with rapid glance at the pre departure clearance 'cleared as filed ewr parke' line was all it took for me to miss the new procedure SID. Consequently we flew the wrong SID until corrected by ewr departure. After 36+ yrs I flew the wrong way because I didn't read. My corrective action is to read out loud every word on future pre departure clearance's.

Title: AN ACR B727 FLC FLIES THE WRONG SID. READ BUT DID NOT FOLLOW THE PDC. ALERT DEP CTLR GOT THEM BACK ON COURSE.

Narrative: BOTH CAPT AND COPLT HAD RECENT FAMILIARITY WITH EWR DEPS. ABOUT 20 MINS PRIOR TO PUSHBACK THE COPLT BRIEFED AND BOTH PLTS SET UP FOR A EWR 6 DEP -- THE FAMILIAR AND RECENTLY USED DEP. IT WAS THE COPLT'S LEG. RWY 22R HAD BEEN CLOSED DUE TO ACR ACCIDENT. AT PUSHBACK THE PDC ARRIVED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE OPENING OF RWY 22R. SINCE RWY 22R HAD BEEN CLOSED, TKOF DATA FOR RWY 22R WAS NOT INCLUDED WITH OUR PAPERS. ENTIRE CREW OCCUPIED WITH CONFIRMING RWY 22R USAGE, COUPLED WITH EVERYONE DESIRING AN ON-TIME PUSHBACK. BOTH PLTS NOTED PARKE AS FIRST VECTOR FIX, BUT NEITHER PLT NOTED WE WERE TO USE THE 'ARTHUR KILL 1 DEP' TO PARKE VICE THE BRIEFED AND FAMILIAR 'EWR 6 DEP' TO PARKE. (ARTHUR KILL 1 DEP WAS A NEW PROC EFFECTIVE JUL/XA/97.) WHEN WE ERRONEOUSLY FLEW OUT ON A 220 DEG HDG (OF THE EWR 6) VICE THE 250 DEG HDG ON THE ARTHUR KILL, WE HAD TO BE 'EDUCATED' BY ATC (DEP) THAT WE WERE CLRED THE 'ARTHUR KILL.' OUR ERROR WAS NOTED, AND CORRECTION MADE WITH RADAR VECTOR DIRECT TO SBJ, 112.9, SOLBERG. DISTR BY RWY 22R RWY OPENING AND RUSH TO GET OFF ON TIME, COUPLED WITH RAPID GLANCE AT THE PDC 'CLRED AS FILED EWR PARKE' LINE WAS ALL IT TOOK FOR ME TO MISS THE NEW PROC SID. CONSEQUENTLY WE FLEW THE WRONG SID UNTIL CORRECTED BY EWR DEP. AFTER 36+ YRS I FLEW THE WRONG WAY BECAUSE I DIDN'T READ. MY CORRECTIVE ACTION IS TO READ OUT LOUD EVERY WORD ON FUTURE PDC'S.
