Narrative:

Climbing to 7000 ft MSL, departure controller advised traffic 12 O'clock position VFR descending to 8500 ft MSL. Saw target on TCASII. Told first officer to reduce rate of climb so we would not get an RA. Autothrottles were engaged, but did not limit speed to our bug speed of 250 KTS. I was pre-occupied with traffic watch and did not notice airspeed had built to approximately 300 KTS before we corrected airspeed to 250 KTS.
