Narrative:

We were being vectored for traffic and were subsequently given a heading to intercept J82 east of jhw. I selected alb VOR and the inbound radial. The first officer selected what he thought was jhw and the outbound radial. He inadvertently selected dkk and the 097 degree radial and intercepted that, which put us north of course. I did not check the first officer's VOR selection. Center called us about our error and vectored us directly to hancock VOR. No problem from center was noted. Later, I looked at the chart and saw how the error had happened because of the closeness of the frequencys on the chart. I know in the past, it is easily made on those 2 frequencys. Landing at ewr was uneventful. Supplemental information from acn 376341: we were being vectored for traffic and were later given a heading to intercept J82 east of jhw. I inadvertently selected the 087 degree radial from dkk instead of the radial out of jhw. This error was made due to the closeness of the frequencys on the chart. The captain had selected albany and the inbound for J82, but then switched to ithaca, so he did not notice the error.

Title: MD80 FLC FAILS TO IDENT A MISDIALED VOR AND OVERSHOT THE REQUIRED RADIAL OFF OF JHW VOR. FO HAD SELECTED DKK INSTEAD OF JHW.

Narrative: WE WERE BEING VECTORED FOR TFC AND WERE SUBSEQUENTLY GIVEN A HDG TO INTERCEPT J82 E OF JHW. I SELECTED ALB VOR AND THE INBOUND RADIAL. THE FO SELECTED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS JHW AND THE OUTBOUND RADIAL. HE INADVERTENTLY SELECTED DKK AND THE 097 DEG RADIAL AND INTERCEPTED THAT, WHICH PUT US N OF COURSE. I DID NOT CHK THE FO'S VOR SELECTION. CTR CALLED US ABOUT OUR ERROR AND VECTORED US DIRECTLY TO HANCOCK VOR. NO PROB FROM CTR WAS NOTED. LATER, I LOOKED AT THE CHART AND SAW HOW THE ERROR HAD HAPPENED BECAUSE OF THE CLOSENESS OF THE FREQS ON THE CHART. I KNOW IN THE PAST, IT IS EASILY MADE ON THOSE 2 FREQS. LNDG AT EWR WAS UNEVENTFUL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 376341: WE WERE BEING VECTORED FOR TFC AND WERE LATER GIVEN A HDG TO INTERCEPT J82 E OF JHW. I INADVERTENTLY SELECTED THE 087 DEG RADIAL FROM DKK INSTEAD OF THE RADIAL OUT OF JHW. THIS ERROR WAS MADE DUE TO THE CLOSENESS OF THE FREQS ON THE CHART. THE CAPT HAD SELECTED ALBANY AND THE INBOUND FOR J82, BUT THEN SWITCHED TO ITHACA, SO HE DID NOT NOTICE THE ERROR.
