Narrative:

After the runup, I called the tower and said, capital city tower ready to depart runway 26. The ATC reply was, taxi to runway 26 and climb to 2000 ft. I was out with a CFI, xtraining from a C172 to a piper warrior, and we both thought we were clear for takeoff. After takeoff we saw the oncoming aircraft. To prevent a recurrence I will follow a simple rule, verify ATC clearance. Supplemental information from acn 375146: an aircraft was making a practice ILS approach to the other end of the runway. Both aircraft were aware of each other's position and continued flying.
