FK100 aircraft waiting takeoff clearance in #1 position holding short, another aircraft, same air carrier and very similar call sign, was #2. ATCT local controller got the two confused and cleared the #2 aircraft into position, but reporter, being #1 told tower that they were #1. Controller then cleared the #2 aircraft for takeoff when reporter's aircraft was the one on the runway.

Narrative:
Location: dfw. Holding short of taxiway K at spot zz, cleared after MD80 to your right, outer to runway 17R. First MD80 to our right turned in at spot xx, second MD80 held position short of spot yy. Ground now says abcd, that MD80 is holding for you. Now #2 aircraft short of runway 17R on taxiway left. Tower cleared abed into position runway 17R at taxiway eh. #1 aircraft was not abed and told tower that. That resolved, with no other aircraft at taxiway ef or taxiway eg we heard, abcd position and hold runway 17R. We replied, abcd position and hold runway 17R. No reply from tower at this point. When cleared for takeoff tower said, abed cleared for takeoff runway 17R. We replied, abcd is in position runway 17R -- was that clearance for us? Abed was now #1 at taxiway eh. Tower said he had cleared abed into position, not abcd. There was definite confusion in the tower about what aircraft were where, awaiting takeoff runway 17R. There was a jump seater in our cockpit that heard the xmissions the same as we did.
