Narrative:

Climbing out on takeoff I experienced total electrical failure. I turned to a right downwind for the departure runway and tried to troubleshoot the problem. I departed the pattern to the northwest and engaged my backup power unit. I regained enough electrical power to run a radio. I re-established radio contact with the tower and was cleared to land. The landing was uneventful and I was met by crash trucks. Cause of electrical failure was due to failure of aircraft battery.
