Narrative:
I was flying south of lck from east to west. Radio contact with lck was attempted with no reply. Traffic was heard and observed at my 9 O'clock position. The controller advised the aircraft (a military helicopter) that he was closing on me. I changed my heading from 270 degrees to 360 degrees to avert a conflict (when I concluded that the helicopter was not going to change his heading). By this time I was in lck's airspace and he heard me state that I was the aircraft they were talking about. I changed my heading back to 270 degrees, and when I cleared the control area received permission to change frequency from lck. Possible penetration into controled airspace without permission. Since the incident I have replaced the battery to my radio and repaired the coax cable. I believe these 2 items contributed to my radio problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA FLYING CLOSE TO LCK, OH, HAS A MINOR CONFLICT WITH A HELI. AS THE SMA TURNS TO AVOID THE HELI, HE FLIES INTO CLASS D AIRSPACE BUT QUICKLY TURNS TO EXIT THE AIRSPACE. PLT SUSPECTS THE RADIO HE WAS USING, FAILED TO OPERATE SO THE TWR NEVER HEARD HIS CALLS FOR TFC ASSISTANCE.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING S OF LCK FROM E TO W. RADIO CONTACT WITH LCK WAS ATTEMPTED WITH NO REPLY. TFC WAS HEARD AND OBSERVED AT MY 9 O'CLOCK POS. THE CTLR ADVISED THE ACFT (A MIL HELI) THAT HE WAS CLOSING ON ME. I CHANGED MY HDG FROM 270 DEGS TO 360 DEGS TO AVERT A CONFLICT (WHEN I CONCLUDED THAT THE HELI WAS NOT GOING TO CHANGE HIS HEADING). BY THIS TIME I WAS IN LCK'S AIRSPACE AND HE HEARD ME STATE THAT I WAS THE ACFT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT. I CHANGED MY HEADING BACK TO 270 DEGS, AND WHEN I CLRED THE CTL AREA RECEIVED PERMISSION TO CHANGE FREQ FROM LCK. POSSIBLE PENETRATION INTO CTLED AIRSPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION. SINCE THE INCIDENT I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY TO MY RADIO AND REPAIRED THE COAX CABLE. I BELIEVE THESE 2 ITEMS CONTRIBUTED TO MY RADIO PROB.
