Narrative:

On jun/wed/97, our aircraft inadvertently landed at thv when the runway was closed. Neither the aircraft nor the runway was damaged. After talking to FSS 3 times that morning, an IFR flight plan was filed to york, PA, from washington, PA. The flight was flown under IFR and was concluded by being radar vectored for an NDB approach to runway 16. WX was VFR and runway 16 was seen at about 4 NM out. The approach and landing were normal. IFR cancellation was given to the controller after the landing on 121.65. After back-taxiing runway 16 to the ramp area it was discovered that the runway was closed. It was not marked on the runway or the displaced threshold but up on the grass some 50+ ft was a yellow X. I was embarrassed that neither myself nor the captain had seen the closed marking. I was equally concerned that ATC had just given us a radar assisted approach to the field, and that the FSS had not given the NOTAM to us. There were many things that didn't happen that day that contributed to the event. Any of 3 things would have stopped us from landing on the closed runway, receiving the NOTAM, being told by ATC that we were flying an approach to a closed runway, or for us to have visually seen the X. I can't tell you how embarrassing it was, I am very thankful that my passenger and the airplane were not damaged.

Title: CPR JET LANDS AT YORK, PA, AND FINDS THAT THEY LANDED ON A CLOSED RWY. RPTR HAD SPOKEN WITH IPT FSS AND THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE ARPT STATUS. MDT APCH CTLR FAILED TO NOTE AS WELL.

Narrative: ON JUN/WED/97, OUR ACFT INADVERTENTLY LANDED AT THV WHEN THE RWY WAS CLOSED. NEITHER THE ACFT NOR THE RWY WAS DAMAGED. AFTER TALKING TO FSS 3 TIMES THAT MORNING, AN IFR FLT PLAN WAS FILED TO YORK, PA, FROM WASHINGTON, PA. THE FLT WAS FLOWN UNDER IFR AND WAS CONCLUDED BY BEING RADAR VECTORED FOR AN NDB APCH TO RWY 16. WX WAS VFR AND RWY 16 WAS SEEN AT ABOUT 4 NM OUT. THE APCH AND LNDG WERE NORMAL. IFR CANCELLATION WAS GIVEN TO THE CTLR AFTER THE LNDG ON 121.65. AFTER BACK-TAXIING RWY 16 TO THE RAMP AREA IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE RWY WAS CLOSED. IT WAS NOT MARKED ON THE RWY OR THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD BUT UP ON THE GRASS SOME 50+ FT WAS A YELLOW X. I WAS EMBARRASSED THAT NEITHER MYSELF NOR THE CAPT HAD SEEN THE CLOSED MARKING. I WAS EQUALLY CONCERNED THAT ATC HAD JUST GIVEN US A RADAR ASSISTED APCH TO THE FIELD, AND THAT THE FSS HAD NOT GIVEN THE NOTAM TO US. THERE WERE MANY THINGS THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN THAT DAY THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE EVENT. ANY OF 3 THINGS WOULD HAVE STOPPED US FROM LNDG ON THE CLOSED RWY, RECEIVING THE NOTAM, BEING TOLD BY ATC THAT WE WERE FLYING AN APCH TO A CLOSED RWY, OR FOR US TO HAVE VISUALLY SEEN THE X. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW EMBARRASSING IT WAS, I AM VERY THANKFUL THAT MY PAX AND THE AIRPLANE WERE NOT DAMAGED.
