Narrative:

On a scheduled IFR flight iln-fat we were required to deviate from our IFR clearance to avoid a glider. ATC reported an intermittent target at our 12 O'clock position. When we spotted a glider at our 12 O'clock position it was maneuvering on our flight path around 4000-4200 ft MSL. We initiated a descending left turn, approximately 30 degrees left and descended from 4200 ft MSL to approximately 3300 ft MSL until passing traffic. After clear of traffic we reintercepted the mxq 305 degree radial and resumed climb to previously cleared altitude of 10000 ft. We did advise day departure of our intended deviation. Suggest encoding xponders for all glider aircraft.

Title: FLC OF DC8 CARGO FLT HAS CLOSE PROX TO GLIDER AS THEY CLB OUT AFTER TKOF. DEV IS NECESSARY TO AVOID A CONFLICT.

Narrative: ON A SCHEDULED IFR FLT ILN-FAT WE WERE REQUIRED TO DEVIATE FROM OUR IFR CLRNC TO AVOID A GLIDER. ATC RPTED AN INTERMITTENT TARGET AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS. WHEN WE SPOTTED A GLIDER AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS IT WAS MANEUVERING ON OUR FLT PATH AROUND 4000-4200 FT MSL. WE INITIATED A DSNDING L TURN, APPROX 30 DEGS L AND DSNDED FROM 4200 FT MSL TO APPROX 3300 FT MSL UNTIL PASSING TFC. AFTER CLR OF TFC WE REINTERCEPTED THE MXQ 305 DEG RADIAL AND RESUMED CLB TO PREVIOUSLY CLRED ALT OF 10000 FT. WE DID ADVISE DAY DEP OF OUR INTENDED DEV. SUGGEST ENCODING XPONDERS FOR ALL GLIDER ACFT.
