Narrative:

WX at las was clear with unrestr visibility with a temperature of 100 degrees F. The aircraft was an MD83 at a weight of approximately 138000 pounds. After takeoff and at an altitude of approximately 3800 ft, a loud bang was heard in the cockpit followed by power loss on the l-hand engine. Vibration of the aircraft was also experienced at this point. The captain, as the PNF declared the emergency and requested a return to las. The crew carried out the engine out procedures and checklists and returned to land at las without further incident. Upon inspection of the aircraft, it was found to have a hole in the outboard left engine nacelle caused by possible failure of the N2 or compressor section. Also, during the time of occurrence passenger were briefed by flight attendants to prepare for our immediate return and emergency vehicles were summoned in case of problems upon landing. Passenger were deplaned at the gate after a normal taxi in using the right engine.

Title: AN MD83 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED TO LAS DUE TO AN UNCONTAINED #1 ENG FAILURE.

Narrative: WX AT LAS WAS CLR WITH UNRESTR VISIBILITY WITH A TEMP OF 100 DEGS F. THE ACFT WAS AN MD83 AT A WT OF APPROX 138000 LBS. AFTER TKOF AND AT AN ALT OF APPROX 3800 FT, A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD IN THE COCKPIT FOLLOWED BY PWR LOSS ON THE L-HAND ENG. VIBRATION OF THE ACFT WAS ALSO EXPERIENCED AT THIS POINT. THE CAPT, AS THE PNF DECLARED THE EMER AND REQUESTED A RETURN TO LAS. THE CREW CARRIED OUT THE ENG OUT PROCS AND CHKLISTS AND RETURNED TO LAND AT LAS WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. UPON INSPECTION OF THE ACFT, IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE A HOLE IN THE OUTBOARD L ENG NACELLE CAUSED BY POSSIBLE FAILURE OF THE N2 OR COMPRESSOR SECTION. ALSO, DURING THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE PAX WERE BRIEFED BY FLT ATTENDANTS TO PREPARE FOR OUR IMMEDIATE RETURN AND EMER VEHICLES WERE SUMMONED IN CASE OF PROBS UPON LNDG. PAX WERE DEPLANED AT THE GATE AFTER A NORMAL TAXI IN USING THE R ENG.
