Narrative:

Crew shut down 1 engine and notified center of loss of 1 engine and declared emergency, but failed to take any action to divert to nearest suitable airport as indicated in DC9 operating manual -- fire section, page 3. Crew lost engine en route from dfw to atl over eld, and advised center, then dispatch at least 5 times of their intention to continue to destination atl on 1 engine. Only after repeated prompts from dispatch did crew divert to jan, but they flew from eld to mei with no attempt to comply with 'land nearest suitable.' time on 1 engine was unnecessarily increased and safety was jeopardized as a result. Airline maintenance department should be capable of providing accurate data on actual single engine time.
