Narrative:

Fire on engine #3 caused by the aircraft generator. The #3 generator went off-line about 5 mins after departing oak en route to iln. The generator indicated an over voltage problem. The company abnormal procedures were complied with, which has the #3 generator off but still connected. Maintenance stated the #3 generator either overheated or malfunctioned and started the fire. The fire could have been prevented had the company abnormal procedures been to disconnect the generator. If the generator is malfunctioning to extent it is not possible to put it back on-line, it should be disconnected.
