DC8 freighter aircraft off course from airway. Was using INS as primary navigation system. Failed to back up with VOR for radial reference. Correcting back on course after the flight crew updated INS information. New first officer may have initially mis-programmed the INS.

Center questioned our heading for course. INS was aggressively correcting course after receiving update information. Center suggested 15 degrees left heading to maintain course. Avoid by manual intercept after update.
