Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the airplane was a B757 with P&west 2037 engines. The engine started to stall without any throttle movement. Maintenance suspected the variable vanes were off schedule and most likely a variable vane controller failed. The reporter was not contacted by the FAA.
