Narrative:

After takeoff, tower told us to turn to a 200 degree heading at 1.6 DME, which we did. I do not remember whether tower told us to switch to departure at that time or not, although they usually do. When level at 8000 ft and waiting for the climb and handoff to ZTL, the airwaves were noticeably quiet and I realized we weren't properly switched to departure frequency which was in the box but the switch was probably not fully toggled so we didn't hear tower trying to reach us either. No conflicts of traffic were involved that we know of. I must always ensure a positive check-in confirmation with controllers. I must ensure positive toggle switch movement and green light for correct frequency selection.

Title: FLC OF AN F100 LOST CONTACT WITH ATC BECAUSE RADIO COM SWITCH WAS NOT PLACED IN PROPER POS. THIS HAPPENED AS ACFT WAS FLYING THROUGH ATL, GA, AIRSPACE.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF, TWR TOLD US TO TURN TO A 200 DEG HDG AT 1.6 DME, WHICH WE DID. I DO NOT REMEMBER WHETHER TWR TOLD US TO SWITCH TO DEP AT THAT TIME OR NOT, ALTHOUGH THEY USUALLY DO. WHEN LEVEL AT 8000 FT AND WAITING FOR THE CLB AND HDOF TO ZTL, THE AIRWAVES WERE NOTICEABLY QUIET AND I REALIZED WE WEREN'T PROPERLY SWITCHED TO DEP FREQ WHICH WAS IN THE BOX BUT THE SWITCH WAS PROBABLY NOT FULLY TOGGLED SO WE DIDN'T HEAR TWR TRYING TO REACH US EITHER. NO CONFLICTS OF TFC WERE INVOLVED THAT WE KNOW OF. I MUST ALWAYS ENSURE A POSITIVE CHK-IN CONFIRMATION WITH CTLRS. I MUST ENSURE POSITIVE TOGGLE SWITCH MOVEMENT AND GREEN LIGHT FOR CORRECT FREQ SELECTION.
