Narrative:
In cruise at FL330, aircraft experienced severe turbulence. Autoplt disconnected and PF took control of aircraft. Severe turbulence lasted 10-15 seconds, aircraft deviated altitude approximately 400 ft. Severe turbulence was immediately reported to ATC.

Title: AUTOPLT TRIPS OFF IN A DC8-71 WHEN IT ENCOUNTERS SEVERE TURB IN CRUISE AT FL330. ACFT LOSES 400 FT IN EPISODE. CREW NOTIFIES ATC OF TURB.
Narrative: IN CRUISE AT FL330, ACFT EXPERIENCED SEVERE TURB. AUTOPLT DISCONNECTED AND PF TOOK CTL OF ACFT. SEVERE TURB LASTED 10-15 SECONDS, ACFT DEVIATED ALT APPROX 400 FT. SEVERE TURB WAS IMMEDIATELY RPTED TO ATC.
