Narrative:

On climb out, initial clearance was to 2000 ft, then 3000 ft. I was convinced that I heard a clearance to 4000 ft, however, when I leveled at 4000 ft, the controller told me I was only cleared to 3000 ft. Contributing was the fact that I am accustomed to 2 pilot operations with altitude alert and pre-select. I believe that this may not have happened if an altitude reminder of some sort were installed in the panel.
