Narrative:

ZID gave us a clearance to cross 20 mi west of shelbyville VOR at 17000 ft. I set 12000 ft in the altitude preselector and the PF confirmed that 12000 ft was set. As we are approaching 12000 ft the controller asked us what altitude we were descending to. He then instructed us to level off at 13000 ft and handed us off to another ZID controller. I was giving IOE to a new captain and we were discussing descent profiles. The specific arrival chart had 12000 ft as an altitude to be expected for the arrival. We discussed what rate of descent we needed and at what time we should start down (to 12000 ft). Then we received a clearance to 17000 ft. Since we had talked about descending to 12000 ft, I think that I set 12000 ft in the altitude preselector instead of 17000 ft because we were 'proprogrammed' for 12000 ft.

Title: MDT ACFT WITH DSCNT CLRNC TO 17000 FT. RPTR CAPT, GIVING IOE TO NEW CAPT, WAS EXPECTING DSCNT TO 12000 FT AS DEPICTED ON PROFILE CHART AND HAD DISCUSSED DSCNT RATE, ETC. BOTH FLC ACKNOWLEDGED CLRNC, BUT SET 12000 FT IN ALT WINDOW. APCHING 12000 FT CTLR INTERVENED AND INSTRUCTED THEM TO LEVEL AT 13000 FT. CAPT RPTR SAYS THEY WERE PRE- PROGRAMMED TO DSND TO 12000 FT.

Narrative: ZID GAVE US A CLRNC TO CROSS 20 MI W OF SHELBYVILLE VOR AT 17000 FT. I SET 12000 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECTOR AND THE PF CONFIRMED THAT 12000 FT WAS SET. AS WE ARE APCHING 12000 FT THE CTLR ASKED US WHAT ALT WE WERE DSNDING TO. HE THEN INSTRUCTED US TO LEVEL OFF AT 13000 FT AND HANDED US OFF TO ANOTHER ZID CTLR. I WAS GIVING IOE TO A NEW CAPT AND WE WERE DISCUSSING DSCNT PROFILES. THE SPECIFIC ARR CHART HAD 12000 FT AS AN ALT TO BE EXPECTED FOR THE ARR. WE DISCUSSED WHAT RATE OF DSCNT WE NEEDED AND AT WHAT TIME WE SHOULD START DOWN (TO 12000 FT). THEN WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO 17000 FT. SINCE WE HAD TALKED ABOUT DSNDING TO 12000 FT, I THINK THAT I SET 12000 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECTOR INSTEAD OF 17000 FT BECAUSE WE WERE 'PROPROGRAMMED' FOR 12000 FT.
