Narrative:

During a quick turn out of our hub (ord), the captain and I went into operations briefly. We returned to the aircraft, ran the checklist, and departed without incident. However, during our absence, maintenance removed the maintenance log from the aircraft and didn't return it prior to departure. We had flown the same aircraft for 3 previous legs and apparently overlooked the aml on the checklist. Although we may have been hurried, I also believe that part of the problem is the fact that maintenance left no indication or notification that they had removed the aml from the aircraft. We were notified by dbq operations during our in-range call, and the flight landed normally. The required paperwork was faxed and the return flight was without incident. We must be less complacent and not forget to rechk all items. Also, maintenance should not be allowed to remove any paperwork or logbooks from the aircraft without notifying the crew.

Title: LTT FLC DEPARTS WITH NO MAINT LOGBOOK ON BOARD. NOTIFIED BY COMPANY OPS WHEN IN RANGE CALL MADE.

Narrative: DURING A QUICK TURN OUT OF OUR HUB (ORD), THE CAPT AND I WENT INTO OPS BRIEFLY. WE RETURNED TO THE ACFT, RAN THE CHKLIST, AND DEPARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER, DURING OUR ABSENCE, MAINT REMOVED THE MAINT LOG FROM THE ACFT AND DIDN'T RETURN IT PRIOR TO DEP. WE HAD FLOWN THE SAME ACFT FOR 3 PREVIOUS LEGS AND APPARENTLY OVERLOOKED THE AML ON THE CHKLIST. ALTHOUGH WE MAY HAVE BEEN HURRIED, I ALSO BELIEVE THAT PART OF THE PROB IS THE FACT THAT MAINT LEFT NO INDICATION OR NOTIFICATION THAT THEY HAD REMOVED THE AML FROM THE ACFT. WE WERE NOTIFIED BY DBQ OPS DURING OUR IN-RANGE CALL, AND THE FLT LANDED NORMALLY. THE REQUIRED PAPERWORK WAS FAXED AND THE RETURN FLT WAS WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE MUST BE LESS COMPLACENT AND NOT FORGET TO RECHK ALL ITEMS. ALSO, MAINT SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO REMOVE ANY PAPERWORK OR LOGBOOKS FROM THE ACFT WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE CREW.
