Narrative:

Arriving atl on rome STAR from over bna. Received clearance from atl approach control to descend to 10000 ft. Both pilots were clear on this and 10000 ft was read back and put in altitude alert window. As we were passing 10800 ft we were queried by approach if we were level at 11000 ft. We immediately stopped the descent, never going below 10700 ft and climbed to 11000 ft. No conflict occurred. From the tone of the controller's voice and her appreciative sound we felt it was an error on her part. We both in the cockpit felt strongly that we had heard and read back 10000 ft.
