Narrative:

Leveled off at FL310, in cruise. Flight attendant came to cockpit emotionally concerned. Passenger sitting in xx was having stroke/heart attack type symptoms. No doctor was on board. We requested turn direct mke (home domicile/departure point/descent profile -- 150 NM) chicago gave us priority handling -- outstanding job! Company then requested land in msn (county airport). We did not understand this, they said it was closer, however, with the descent profile we had to do turns to get down in time to land msn. Landed msn without problems. Emt's met aircraft, gave passenger oxygen, checked blood pressure. Found she was heavily medicated and was traveling with son and daughter. She had history of medical problems. Her doctor would not give us a release to allow her to continue as she had requested. Captain's decision, deplane passenger, seek medical release before further flight! Flight continued onto destination lax. Difficult occurrence at the beginning of a 3 leg red-eye mke-lax- las-mke.
