Accepted clearance to 3500 ft. Descended to 3500 ft. Approach inquired as to what altitude we were, then gave us clearance to climb to 4000 ft. We complied and landed without incidence. Supplemental information from acn 365459: situation never clarified. I believe we may have inadvertently flown a heading or altitude assigned to another aircraft on frequency.
