Narrative:

During engine start on left engine, had no light-off within prescribed 20 seconds. Secured engine with fuel control lever and followed aborted start procedures. Decided to tug back in for maintenance. Tug driver reported smoke coming from left engine. I called immediately for emergency equipment. About 10 seconds later tug driver reported more smoke and that he thinks it might be a fire. I performed the engine fire checklist. At the same time the emergency equipment arrived, confirmed the fire and immediately extinguished the fire. I coordinated to have portable stairs placed at 1R galley door. I then initiated an orderly passenger deplaning.
