MD80 flight crew fail to make a crossing altitude in their clearance. PIC thought clearance was crossing at 10 DME at 10000 ft versus 30 DME at 10000 ft. Interpolation and transposition error.

Narrative:
Approximately 120 mi west of lax VOR, PF was told to cross 30 mi west of lal at and maintain 10000 ft. I started down and somehow believed the crossing restr to be at 10 DME west. This caused me to cross 30 mi west at approximately 12000 ft MSL. Copilot (PNF) caught the mistake too late. In the future I will write down crossing restrs and will check periodically during descent to prevent a mindset.

IN THE FUTURE I WILL WRITE DOWN XING RESTRS AND WILL CHK PERIODICALLY DURING DSCNT TO PREVENT A MINDSET.
