Narrative:

Level at FL290, after ATC informed us this would be the best ride, mostly smooth with only occasional light chop, I turned seat belt sign off after about 20 mins. Just north of tul VOR, encountered unexpected and unrpted severe turbulence. I immediately turned on seat belt sign and requested immediate descent to lower altitude. Leveled at FL240 where it was smooth. No flight attendants or passenger were injured. Reported event to ATC, and then to dispatch. Continued to msp uneventfully.
