Narrative:

Engine surge/backfire at 1000 ft AGL. At 5000 ft more surges, retarded throttle to idle, declared emergency and diverted to iad. At iad determined engine change necessary. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: this B757-200 captain said that the initial surging and compressor stalls started at 1500 ft or 'just about the time we were going to climb power.' he said that the right engine settled down, but at 5000 ft the engine began to compressor stall again so he retarded the engine to idle power and diverted to iad. The engine operated normally at idle so he left it running to supply electrical, hydraulics and other system. After landing, maintenance personnel determined that an engine change was necessary. The technicians were not sure, at that time, of the causes of the compressor stalls. The captain said that he has since then talked to the maintenance suprvs, but still has not been told what caused the problem.

Title: A B757-200 FLC OF A MAJOR ACR HAS THE R ENG SURGE FOLLOWED BY COMPRESSOR STALLS DURING CLBOUT. THEY DECLARE AN EMER, DIVERT AND LAND AND THE ENG IS CHANGED.

Narrative: ENG SURGE/BACKFIRE AT 1000 FT AGL. AT 5000 FT MORE SURGES, RETARDED THROTTLE TO IDLE, DECLARED EMER AND DIVERTED TO IAD. AT IAD DETERMINED ENG CHANGE NECESSARY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THIS B757-200 CAPT SAID THAT THE INITIAL SURGING AND COMPRESSOR STALLS STARTED AT 1500 FT OR 'JUST ABOUT THE TIME WE WERE GOING TO CLB PWR.' HE SAID THAT THE R ENG SETTLED DOWN, BUT AT 5000 FT THE ENG BEGAN TO COMPRESSOR STALL AGAIN SO HE RETARDED THE ENG TO IDLE PWR AND DIVERTED TO IAD. THE ENG OPERATED NORMALLY AT IDLE SO HE LEFT IT RUNNING TO SUPPLY ELECTRICAL, HYDS AND OTHER SYS. AFTER LNDG, MAINT PERSONNEL DETERMINED THAT AN ENG CHANGE WAS NECESSARY. THE TECHNICIANS WERE NOT SURE, AT THAT TIME, OF THE CAUSES OF THE COMPRESSOR STALLS. THE CAPT SAID THAT HE HAS SINCE THEN TALKED TO THE MAINT SUPRVS, BUT STILL HAS NOT BEEN TOLD WHAT CAUSED THE PROB.
